Indications/Uses
Patients w/ DM who require insulin for the maintenance of glucose homeostasis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to human insulin unless used as part of a desensitization program. Hypoglycemia. IV administration.
Special Precautions
Transferring to another type or brand, changes in strength, species, &/or method of manufacture. Less pronounced or different early warning symptoms of hypoglycemia in conditions including long duration of diabetes, diabetic nerve disease, medications (eg, β-blockers). Inadequate use of dosages or discontinuation of treatment may lead to hyperglycemia & diabetic ketoacidosis especially in insulin-dependent diabetics. Uncorrected hypoglycemic & hyperglycemic reactions. Increased insulin requirements during illness or emotional disturbances. Change in insulin requirements in diseases of the adrenal, pituitary or thyroids glands & in the presence of renal or hepatic impairment; during illness or emotional disturbances; change in the level of physical activity or usual diet. Instruct patients to perform continuous rotation of the inj site to reduce the risk of developing lipodystrophy & cutaneous amyloidosis. Observe for signs & symptoms of heart failure, wt gain & edema if used in combination w/ pioglitazone; discontinue if any deterioration in cardiac symptoms occurs. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Redness, swelling, & itching at the inj site.
Drug Interactions
May increase insulin requirements w/ glucocorticoids, thyroid hormones, growth hormone, danazol, β2-sympathomimetics (eg, ritodrine, salbutamol, terbutaline), thiazides. May reduce insulin requirements w/ oral hypoglycemics, salicylates (eg, ASA), certain antidepressants (eg, MAOIs), certain ACE inhibitors (eg, captopril, enalapril), ARBs, non-selective β-blocking agents & alcohol. May both decrease or increase insulin dose requirements w/ somatostatin analogues (eg, octreotide, lanreotide).
